Senior year of high school for many of you reading this website was about preparing for college. Whether you were headed to a community college to start, or a 4 year university with a dormitory to decorate and roommates to meet. In today's world almost half of high school seniors are preparing to apply at local companies to where they can have transportation to. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the graduating class of 2019 (January- October timeframe), only 66.2% of graduating seniors were enrolled in a college or university post high school. To give better numbers, out of 3.2M people who graduated high school in 2019, only 2.1M were enrolled in college or a university the same year. That is a decrease from the previous year 2018 from 69.1%. That leaves just over 33% going straight to the workforce.
In partnership with The New Standard Group, Tampa Chapter, we are hosting a fundraising gala to benefit our 2023 initiatives.
Our Mission is to provide postsecondary workforce preparation, professional and technical training, as well as employment opportunity exposure for young adults residing in the Tampa Bay area's underserved communities-between the ages of 16-25.
Our 2023 planned execution items are as follows:
On a positive note, a growing population of young adults have been enrolling into a trade school post high school, sitting currently at about 35%. This is a growing number predicted due to the rising cost of a college education and the political financial issues around financial aide.
Over the 21st century, enrollment of trade school has increased from 9.6 million to 16 million according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
The average weekly earning for a full time worker aged 25 with no college is $749, compared to a worker with a 4 year degree of $1,281.
Media and popular TV shows such as "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe have increased the exposure and showcased skilled labor jobs and emphasized their importance.
The Department of Education published an article emphasizing the need to double the size of the transportation industry workforce over the next decade to keep up with the needs of growth due to retirement
If high schools increased exposure to their students of the possibility of trade schools, entrepreneur concepts, and enhanced life skills, we could decrease the gap of not only poverty, but also homelessness and the climbing substance abuse rate amongst young adults. The ultimate goal is to give allow graduating seniors in not only high school, but college as well, to make more informed decisions post diplomas and degrees.
